Index of Unfixed Things nasce da un progetto collaborativo sviluppato con ragazzi stranieri minori ospitati presso la Cooperativa Sociale Comunità Progetto di Milano.
L’opera prende forma attraverso un processo di incontro e partecipazione: gli oggetti fotografati sono stati scelti e condivisi dai ragazzi stessi come frammenti della propria quotidianità e memoria personale. Si tratta di oggetti ordinari, spesso minimi — contenitori di necessità, sopravvivenza, affetto, abitudine. Più che documentarli come reperti identificabili, abbiamo scelto di sottrarli alla nitidezza.
Ripresi in movimento su fondo bianco, gli oggetti appaiono instabili, sfuggenti, quasi incapaci di fissarsi nell’immagine. La sfocatura non è un effetto estetico, ma una condizione: la forma visiva di una presenza transitoria, sospesa tra attraversamento e cancellazione.
Il fondo bianco richiama il linguaggio neutrale dell’archivio, della catalogazione amministrativa, della fotografia d’inventario. Ma questa neutralità si incrina: gli oggetti non si lasciano registrare del tutto. Vibrano e slittano, resistendo alla piena identificazione.
In Index of Unfixed Things, ciò che dovrebbe rendere una persona riconoscibile finisce invece per testimoniare la difficoltà di vederla davvero. Le immagini si collocano in uno spazio ambiguo tra apparizione e sparizione, documento e fantasma.
Gli oggetti diventano tracce fragili di corpi in transito: presenze osservate ma non pienamente riconosciute, esposte ma indistinte.
Il progetto riflette sulla condizione di invisibilità che accompagna molte esperienze migratorie contemporanee: una visibilità costante come categoria sociale o politica e, allo stesso tempo, l’assenza di uno sguardo individuale.
Index of Unfixed Things originated from a collaborative project developed with unaccompanied foreign minors hosted by the Comunità Progetto Social Cooperative in Milan.The work emerged through a process of encounter and participation: the photographed objects were selected and shared by the young participants themselves as fragments of their everyday lives and personal memories. They are ordinary, often humble objects—containers of necessity, survival, affection, and habit. Rather than documenting them as identifiable artifacts, we chose to withhold their clarity. Photographed in motion against a white background, the objects appear unstable and elusive, almost incapable of settling into the image. The blur is not an aesthetic effect but a condition: the visual form of a transient presence, suspended between passage and erasure. The white background evokes the neutral language of the archive, administrative cataloguing, and inventory photography. Yet this neutrality begins to fracture: the objects resist complete registration. They vibrate and slip away, refusing full identification. In Index of Unfixed Things, what should make a person recognizable instead bears witness to the difficulty of truly seeing them. The images occupy an ambiguous space between appearance and disappearance, document and ghost. The objects become fragile traces of bodies in transit: presences that are observed but never fully acknowledged, exposed yet indistinct. The project reflects on the condition of invisibility that accompanies many contemporary migratory experiences: a constant visibility as a social or political category, coupled with the absence of an individual gaze.
